    Level Designer | Games

We’re looking for a talented and highly motivated Level Designer to craft levels that resonate with players. If you enjoy telling a story with dense urban spaces, overgrown jungle environments, and traversal-driven and encounter designs, this role is for you.  This is an opportunity to help define the flow and fun of this debut title from the ground up.

    Principal Tech Artist | Games

We’re looking for a talented and highly motivated Principal Technical Artist to help bridge the gap between art and engineering. As a key hire in our game team, you’ll help build the foundation of the game and we’ll rely on your amazing skills to make Kyoryu truly special. This is an opportunity to help define the identity and workflows of our debut title from the ground up.

    Requirements

    • 5+ years in technical art roles with at least one shipped Unreal Engine title
    • Core UE5 & Rendering: Deep, production-proven expertise with Unreal Engine 5, particularly Lumen, Nanite, and Virtual Texturing.
    • Technical lighting: experience setting up and optimizing lighting to build mood, readability, and atmosphere in dense environments, balancing visual quality against performance. Strong command of the UE5 Material Editor and shader authoring across environment and landscape materials, with a performance-conscious approach.
    • Tools & Pipeline: Expert-level Blueprint scripting to build editor utilities, custom details panels, and artist-facing tools that streamline the environment pipeline.
    • Has console experience and proficiency in Python, Blueprints, and scripting for tool development and rapid iteration
    • Proficiency with profiling tools (Unreal Insights, RenderDoc, PIX, or GPU Visualizer) to identify and resolve bottlenecks in memory, draw calls, and overdraw.
    • Experience optimizing dense, complex environments to hit strict performance targets (e.g., 60 FPS) on PC and current-gen consoles.

    Responsibilities

    • Environment Creation: Hands-on environment work: able to get stuck in alongside the Environment Art team building and dressing dense, detailed spaces — bridging artistic intent with technical execution rather than working at arm's length. Strong experience authoring digital assets (HDAs) in SideFX Houdini for art production.
    • Comfortable building light procedural tools to accelerate hand-authored workflows — speeding up blockouts, background fill, and initial environment setup — without taking authorial control away from artists.
    • Proven experience establishing, maintaining, and documenting art-to-engine pipelines, with solid asset validation and version control (Perforce/Git) workflows.
    • Optimization & Profiling: Strong understanding of performance budgets for static and dynamic environments: Nanite fallback meshes, LOD strategies, texture streaming pools, instancing (ISM/HISM), memory management, and lighting optimization.
    • Collaboration & Leadership: Acts as the primary translator and facilitator between the Environment Art team and the Core Engineering/Rendering teams.
    • Champions efficient environment workflows that blend hand-authored craft with light procedural tools to speed up production — without sacrificing artistic control.
    • A track record of mentoring junior/mid-level technical artists and writing clear, accessible technical documentation and style guides.
    • Works closely with Production and Leads to flag technical risks early and propose scalable solutions.

    Nice to have

    • Creature FX experience (feathers, fur, etc.)
    • Interest in Dinosaurs and Japanese culture
    • Passion for storytelling and cinematography

    Floating Rock’s offering

    • The chance to shape the future of Kyoryu from day 1
    • Work among professionals who push for excellence every day but also have a lot of fun while doing so.
    • Relocation and Visa support to live in beautiful New Zealand
    • Competitive salary for NZ market
    • Hybrid work (At least 60% in Wellington office)

    Concept Artist | Games

We’re looking for a concept artist to help define the look and feel of Kyoryu, a third-person dinosaur adventure set in a long-abandoned Tokyo. You play as Tori, a young T-Rex making her way through the ruins. We’re in prototype on Unreal Engine 5, so this is a chance to help set the visual identity from the very start.

    Responsibilities

    • Design environments for a ruined, overgrown Tokyo: streets, interiors, landmarks, and the small details that show how the city fell and what lives there now
    • Develop the look of our dinosaur characters and other creatures
    • Create mood pieces, key art, and color scripts that set the tone for a scene before anything gets modeled
    • Produce turnarounds, reference packs, and callouts that hand off cleanly to environment and character artists
    • Sketch visual ideas for how a space guides the player and how key moments read on screen
    • Iterate quickly through the prototype phase and help us work out what lands

    Requirements

    • A strong portfolio with environment and/or creature concept work. We want to see range and storytelling, not just finish
    • A real sense of mood and atmosphere. You can make a place feel abandoned, tense, or safe through composition and light
    • Experience producing color scripts and character turnarounds
    • Comfort designing for animation and gameplay, not only illustration. Your concepts account for how things move and how the camera sees them
    • Solid fundamentals across form, value, color, perspective, and anatomy
    • Experience working next to a video game, with a sense of what makes a concept usable downstream
    • Openness to direction from the Art Director and Leads, with the agility to iterate quickly

    Pluses

    • A shipped game, or one taken through production
    • Familiarity with Unreal Engine 5, even at a basic level
    • An understanding for Japanese architecture, culture, urban spaces, or nature reclaiming built environments
    • A genuine love for dinosaurs and natural history, and a sense of how real animals inform believable design
    • Some 3D skills (Blender, ZBrush, 3D photobashing) to speed up your own concepting

    Floating Rock’s offering:

    • Chance to shape the look of Kyoryu as we move into Vertical Slice
    • Work among professionals who push for excellence every day while having fun
    • Competitive NZ salary
    • Hybrid work, ideally Wellington-based, or at least within New Zealand
